Mert İpek From Past To Present

1918-1981

Tahir Mert (Zeki Mert’s father) lived between 1918-1981. Despite the impossibilities of the period, he produced his own solutions and started weaving silk on hand looms by making reeds from reeds, spinning wheels from bicycle rims, gulcens from spears, shuttles from bones, bobbins from spears, spools from wood, power from thread, and warps from nails.

1949

In 1949, Tahir Mert bought his first weaving loom and started the business of supplying silk fabric to the local market. He was genius enough to fight technical impossibilities with his inventions, just like the old machines.
He cooked the fabrics he wove in copper cauldrons, ironed them with charcoal irons, and became a handkerchief master in his own time. Tahir Mert was one of the best masters of his craft during his lifetime, and was also known as an honest, smart, skillful and helpful person.

1950-1959

He got married in 1950 and had 3 children. His eldest child, İsmail Mert, was born in 1951, Mehmet Mert was born in 1954, and Mustafa Zeki Mert was born in 1959.

1963-1971

They procured the first twisting machine in 1963 and the first motorized loom in 1971 from Bursa, and the automatic bobbin machine, winding machine and skein machine came after this date.

1972

In 1972, Tahir Mert made a name for himself as the best bozzar master in the Ödemiş Women’s Market by weaving and selling silk handkerchiefs, as well as the local fabric of the time, on the handloom.

1981

After Tahir Mert’s death in 1981, his son Mustafa Zeki Mert continued the business. She started her business by weaving silk handkerchiefs, pink scarves and administrative linen.

1984

He married Gülten Mert in 1984 and together they founded Mert İpek Limited Company. When the demands of the local market fell short of their ideals in a short time, they expanded into the Izmir market and together they transformed the business from local to regional.

1986

In 1986, the land where Mert İpek currently produces was purchased and the foundations of today’s Mert İpek were laid.

1990

They expanded to Istanbul in 1990 in order to advance their regional market goals.

1995

Export started in 1995.

2001

In 2001, the head office was moved to Istanbul.

2008

Tahir Mert, who is the 3rd generation in 2008, actively joined the team after graduating from ITU Textile Engineering Department and currently serves as the general manager.

2012

Sevinç Berber Mert started working as a sales and marketing officer after graduating from ITU in 2012.

2013

After graduating from Boğaziçi University, Department of Business Administration in 2013
Tuğba Mert Taşkan started to carry out garment production and export.

2019

Sercan Taşkan, who graduated from Balıkesir University Industrial Engineering Department in 2019, started working as Production Manager.

2020

It ranked 73rd among Turkey’s 100 fastest growing companies in 2020.
